First Pinch Process

I started my first pinched bowl by forming the clay into a ball shape, to about a size that fits in my two hands. Using my thumb, I pinched the clay, creating a small indentation which I continued to press while rotating the clay. The continuous pressing while rotating the clay created a bowl-like shape.

For decoration, I pressed the curved portion of the cowry shell onto the side of the bowl, and created a hammered metal texture (left photo). I decided to cut the lip of the bowl unevenly, and carved a wavy lines inside the bowl (right photo).

  1. What made you decide on using a cowrie shell to achieve the texture you were looking for?

  2. I needed something with a round shape (or curve) to it, to press and make an indentation. If you keep repeating this you'll create a hammered-look texture.
